Note: Estimates are based on a standard density of 145 lbs/ft³. Actual coverage may vary based on aggregate size and subgrade compaction. Always confirm with your plant before ordering.

How to Calculate Asphalt Tonnage

Calculating the amount of asphalt (hot mix) needed for a project requires three dimensions: Length, Width, and Thickness (Depth). Since asphalt is sold by the Ton, we must convert the volume of the paved area into weight.

The Standard Formula

The industry standard formula used by most contractors is:
(Length x Width x Depth) x Density / 2000 = Tons

Key Variables

  • Density: Standard Hot Mix Asphalt weighs approximately 145 lbs per cubic foot. This can vary slightly depending on the "aggregate" (stones) used in the mix.
  • Safety Margin: It is critical to order extra material. Paving is not an exact science, and running short stops the job.
    • +5%: Standard for simple, rectangular driveways.
    • +10%: Recommended for curved driveways or irregular shapes where waste is higher.
